Google Merchant Shopify Feed Optimization
.avif)
When you're ready to promote your products through Google Ads, you'll likely connect your Shopify store using the free Google & YouTube plugin. It's the go-to solution for most merchants, and for good reason.
Google & YouTube Shopify Plugin: Pros & Cons
The native Shopify integration offers some solid advantages:
- It's completely free – no monthly fees eating into your ad budget
- Fast setup – connects Google Merchant Center, Google Ads, and Google Analytics in minutes
- Built-in SEO options – you can optimize product titles and descriptions right from the plugin
Sounds perfect, right? Well, not quite.
After working with this setup across dozens of campaigns over the past years, I've run into three consistent issues that can seriously impact your campaign performance:
- The plugin automatically adds UTM tags to products in Merchant Center, immediately marking the channel as "Organic". This is a major issue because you won't be able to distinguish between purchases from paid ads versus organic traffic. You can remove this through a rule in Google Merchant Center itself.
- You can't set your second image as the primary product image. For example, if you want one image on your website but a different one in your ads, you can't do that here.
- Same story with titles. If you want to create custom titles, you're out of luck—there's no way to change them.
That's why when I need customization, I use a paid Shopify plugin for Google Merchant Center called Simprosys.
Simprosys Shopify Plugin: Pros & Cons
Here's what changes:
- Custom titles for each product – optimize for search intent without affecting your website
- Flexible image selection – choose the 2nd product image as your primary ad image
- SEO optimization – refine titles and descriptions specifically for your feed
The investment pays for itself when your ads start converting better because your product data is actually optimized for how people search.
